I had a 1975 GMC Vandura van that would die if you left the lights on for just a few minutes. I was writing the lyrics to this song on trips to Philly for work & simultaneously repeating to myself "don't leave your lights on" to avoid breaking down far from home. The overall message of the song is inspired by the saying "right wing / left wing; same bird."
