For my birthday 3/3/21 I am releasing a new track for Bandcamp followers. This one is a studio cover of one of my all time favorite songs by a musical hero of mine: Possessed By Paul James.
This song has carried me through good years & hard times while continuing to feel more relevant every time I hear it. Konrad Wert 's lyrics are timeless. The original version of Ferris Wheel has the bare bones honesty of a Lomax field recording: a moment in time preserved for it's telling of the American story. Konrad's entire being becomes a vehicle for some otherworldly power & the musical by-product is akin to a Ouija board session at a punk rock show. You will know exactly what I mean when you see him live. PPJ is all meat and potatoes; he is a Folk singer who walks the talk. When he's not creating timeless music, he is a Special Education teacher, an activist, & recently stepping up for local government in Kerrville, TX.
I quit drinking 3 weeks ago & I felt a little bit like a giraffe on ice approaching the mic at Sweetfoot Studios . Cutting vocals without some Whiskey to loosen up "the pipes" is definitely a new endeavor. During the vocal take for our version of Ferris Wheel I felt an electricity pumping through my veins. This "experience" was so intense I had to go stand outside in 30° temperatures and swing my arms around.
*Robyn Redish aka Stolen Painting (Toronto, Canada) is creating a Ferris Wheel collage for the official music video (time lapse of the collage creation). The collage will include some skribey art that I created as well as some found imagery. This will be the final single art & the original collaborative piece will be available for purchase. Video will be up Sunday 3/7/21.
You might recognize Robyn's tasteful skills from the Big Nothing single art. Give her a follow and check out her amazing work on instagram. www.instagram.com/stolenpainting/?hl=en
lyrics
my lady yeah she tear my eye
I got no job and i ain't got no ride
what's an old man like me oh mother to do?
&my old lady yeah she break my back
go get your things son & go get packed
hey can't you see, you & I are through
oh mother mother it's a ferris wheel
oh sister brother it's a ferris wheel
& all I seem to do is baby go round, go round
well heaven help us it's a ferris wheel
yeah lordy lordy it's a ferris wheel
& all I wanna do is get my feet back on the ground
I took a chance & I moved back home
my mother lived there, she was all alone
sad sweet father done passed in the fall, in the fall, in the fall
oh my mother yeah she feeds me good
I moved back home because I knew she would
but I'm much to old to be polishing that stone, that stone, that stone
oh heaven help us it's a ferris wheel
oh lordy lordy it's a ferris wheel
& all I seem to do is baby go round, go round, go round, go round
well mother mother it's a ferris wheel
oh sister brother it's a ferris wheel
& all we wanna do is get our feet back on the ground
on the ground
got me a job oh it pays my bread
I swing my bones & I shake my head
I take your nickels, your pennies & your dimes, your dimes, your dimes
& the old ladies yeah they say it's sweet
I shake my bones & I stomp my feet
if i could only pay the rent on time
oh
well brother brother it's a ferris wheel
yeh father mother it's a ferris wheel
& all we seem to do is baby go round, go round, go round, go round
heaven help us it's a ferris wheel
yeah lordy lordy it's a ferris wheel
& all I wanna do is get my feet back on the ground
on the ground
