about

The first time I drove to Nashville, it was in my spruce blue '95 Cadillac Fleetwood Hearse dubbed Victoria. I listened to Hunter S. Thompson audiobooks the entire trip & clacked away on a typewriter in hotel rooms the nights I didn't sleep in the back of the death wagon. My 6-string nylon guitelele rested in the passenger seat until a stoplight or traffic jam would prompt me to elaborate on the "home sweet home" fingerpicking melody. A guitelele is the perfect car-tar (a term I learned on a previous trip to TN) because the neck is short enough to not hit the window when strumming in the driver's seat. The lyrics reek of gas station coffee & remind me of a relentless pair of yellow snakes. This trip put a massive dent in my romanticized view of the great American road trip and all I got was this upside-down lullaby.

lyrics

coast to coast
trail of seeds
first we sow
then we reap
I'm a grow on you like a wicked weed
steal some thunder give it room to breathe
out from under I'm off your leash
with a big old barrel full of elbow grease
brewed by all my best friends and me

in & out
turn the page
don't cast doubt don't you act your age
whats a bird gonna sing about if you put it in a cage
whats a bird gonna sing about if you put it in a cage
somewhere in between the church & state
lost my money but kept my faith
threw a game of cards out on the interstate
forever more embarking on this big escape

home sweet home
cheap hotel
why do i roam?
what's that smell?
threw all my bones in that wishing well
cause good stories come to those who want to tell.
